Growth can kill your business.

Picture this. Your manufacturing business starts life as a ‘backyard operator’. Any customer is a good customer. Revenue grows, you invest a bit – and only a bit – in equipment and premises and somehow, it all seems to be working.

You stumble upon a niche. Now your customers are bigger businesses. Good – right? The volumes they want are larger, so there’s opportunity in that. But – and there is a ‘but’ – now you need to get serious. This is beginning to shape up like it could be a real business!

It’s time to get faster, more reliable machines. It’s time to hire more staff. You need more raw materials, and you hold more stock.
But that’s ok because revenue is up. The cycle repeats. Major customer 1 keeps buying. In fact, their order size increases. Now major customers 2 and 3 are at the door. You are hard-wired to say ‘yes’. So, you do. Exciting times.

You find a decent finance broker, and they get some equipment finance over the line. You suppose that’s good, because you’re going to be making more money, so surely you can afford it? Your super fund has now bought the premises, so in your mind, you are your own landlord. That’s also good, yeah?

But here’s the thing. The last thing you invest in is your finance team. So, now you’re flying blind. The numbers seem to tell the story of growth. But you know something is wrong, because cash is always tight. Really tight. You’re testing the friendship with suppliers; you may even be using good terms with one customer to prop up cashflow for the entire business.

Nobody can give you answers. Nobody can show you a path. That knot in your stomach is always there. Am dead in the water?
That’s when you know you need to invest in the finance function. To get control of cash and cashflow. To find and fix the leaks in your profit. To tell you where you are too fat and too lean. To identify and address risk. To stop being reactive and get proactive.
