Superannuation is such an important component of your wealth. You should only deal with a properly authorised person.
The ATO reports that there are nearly 600,000 self-managed super funds (SMSFs) in operation today. There are many reasons why they have become popular.
Yet superannuation is a highly complex and heavily regulated environment and you should take advice from a properly authorised and competent person before acting.
Important changes have happened
For years, accountants have been able to provide you with certain advice regarding SMSFs and other superannuation matters without needing to hold an Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL), operating under what was known as the Accountants Exemption. Now, all that has changed….
What has changed?
In wide-sweeping changes designed to improve the quality of financial advice and provide additional consumer protection, the laws governing advice on SMSFs changed on 1 July 2016. One such change was the removal of the Accountants Exemption.
What does it mean for us?
These changes mean that accountants are unable to provide the relevant advice unless they either hold an AFSL of their own or are an Authorised Representative of an AFSL holder.
In order to comply with the law, our Director Susan Liebert has become an Authorised Representative of Merit Wealth Pty Ltd – the holder of Australian Financial Services Licence Number 409361.
What does it mean for you?
Some superannuation fund advice provided to you must be supported by a Statement of Advice. So, whilst it is more paperwork you will have the peace-of-mind that comes with knowing that your accountant is properly authorised and competent to provide the advice you are given.
We can provide a Statement of Advice in relation to:
- Setting up a SMSF
- Making contributions into your super fund
- Use of a borrowing arrangement within your SMSF
- Starting and stopping pensions including transition to retirement pensions
- Winding up your SMSF if it is no longer appropriate to your needs
